The Reward of Sincerity
When Fatih Sultan Mehmed conquered Istanbul he was congratulated with encomiums from many poets. The Sultan granted each one of them with generous gifts. One day a poet who recently came from Anatolia sent him the following two verses: Oh prosperous Sultan, let your morning be propitious, your food be milk and cream, your pathway become meadow Hz. Fatih summoned the poet to his presence and granted him with much more gifts. The Sultan’s close ones asked “Sir, why did you compliment so dearly upon these two verses whereas the other previous encomiums did not get as much attention?”
In response Fatih Sultan Mehmed said: “I found these verses more sincere than the rest… As He believes cream and milk to be the most delicious food and the meadow to be the most magnificent place. He has never seen anything batter than this, to see me worthy of it!”
